Gesher Theatre, Theatre company in Tel Aviv, Israel
Gesher Theatre is a theatre company based in Tel Aviv that stages productions in both Hebrew and Russian. Its repertoire covers classical plays and original contemporary works performed for a mixed audience.
The company was founded in 1991 by a group of Russian immigrant actors led by director Yevgeny Arye, during the Gulf War. In the years that followed, it grew into one of the most-attended theatre companies in Israel.
The name Gesher means bridge in Hebrew, which reflects the company's role in connecting Russian and Israeli theatrical traditions. In each production, you can notice how the two languages and storytelling styles are woven together on stage.
Most performances include subtitles in both Hebrew and Russian, so you can follow the show regardless of which language you speak. Booking in advance is a good idea, as popular productions tend to sell out quickly.
The founding actors wrote out their Hebrew lines using Cyrillic letters to help them memorize the text, since many had not yet learned to read the Hebrew alphabet. This allowed the company to keep rehearsing even during air-raid alerts in 1991.
