Wadhvana Wetland, Nature reserve in Dabhoi, Gujarat, India
Wadhvana Wetland is a nature reserve near Dabhoi covering roughly 630 hectares of water surrounded by farmland. The site hosts more than 80 bird species that arrive during winter months to feed and rest.
The wetland began as an irrigation dam built in 1910 by the former Baroda State under King Gaikwad to support local farming. Over time, the water body became an important refuge for migratory birds.
The wetland functions as a gathering place where local students and researchers observe migratory birds in their natural habitat. This role as an educational site has helped build community awareness about wetland conservation.
The best time to visit is between October and March when bird populations are at their peak and viewing conditions are ideal. Access is easiest from Vadodara city, situated about 45 kilometers away, which serves as the main entry point.
The site hosts uncommon bird species like the Dalmatian pelican and Pallas's fish eagle that are rarely seen in accessible locations. Visitors have an unusual chance to observe these special birds without traveling to remote regions.
