Makarpura Palace is a three-story building divided into two sections, containing over one hundred rooms distinguished by ornate brick walls and balconies. The structure exhibits elaborate architectural detailing distributed throughout the entire complex.
Construction began in 1866 under Maharaja Khande Rao and was expanded between 1883 and 1890 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. These phases shaped the architectural form visible today.
The building displays Italian Renaissance features such as fountains and tiered arches that diminish in scale, shaping its exterior character. These architectural details remain visible today, even though the property now serves a different purpose.
The site lies approximately 10 kilometers from Vadodara's center and currently serves as an Air Force school. When planning a visit, check accessibility in advance since it operates as an active military facility.
The property was originally surrounded by a Japanese-style garden spanning about 130 acres, featuring a swan-filled lake and ivory fountains. These fountains were activated during royal visits, making the grounds a special setting for official gatherings.
