Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum

The Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum occupies a section of the Lakshmi Vilas Palace complex and displays European and Indian artwork across two floors. The rooms contain paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects that span different periods and artistic traditions.

The building was founded in 1875 as a school for the children of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and served educational purposes initially. It was converted into a museum in 1961 to display the royal art collections.

The collection features works by Raja Ravi Varma and other Indian artists that tell the story of the Gaekwad family. The pieces displayed reflect the tastes and interests that mattered to the royal household.

The museum is open daily except Mondays and can be explored at your own pace across both floors. Plan enough time to view the artworks without rushing.

The museum houses a working miniature train that was given as a gift to young Prince Ranjitsinh Gaekwad on his fifth birthday. This small model is an overlooked detail that many visitors pass by without noticing.
