Sayaji Baug Zoo, Municipal zoo in Vadodara, India
Sayaji Baug Zoo is a zoological facility within a 113-acre public garden in Vadodara Rural Taluka, Gujarat. The site houses over 35 mammal species, more than 122 bird species, and around 10 reptile species in enclosures spread throughout the garden complex.
Maharaja Sayajirao III founded this zoological park in 1879, creating one of the first facilities of its kind in western India. The aquarium section was added in 1962, expanding the original concept to include aquatic life and fish.
Named after Maharaja Sayajirao, the park introduces schoolchildren to nature conservation through educational programs while showcasing animals from several climate zones. Families spend afternoons walking along shaded paths and observing creatures they would otherwise know only from books.
The entrance sits within the Sayaji Baug public garden and opens daily during afternoon to early evening hours. Visitors find shaded walkways between enclosures and seating areas for rest along the main paths.
The aquarium presents 45 fish species in tanks with temperature-controlled water systems that replicate tropical and subtropical conditions. This part of the facility emerged in the early 1960s and was a rarity among Indian zoos at the time.
