Lago di Gramolazzo, body of water
Lago di Gramolazzo is an artificial reservoir in the Apuan Alps spanning about 1 square kilometer at roughly 600 meters elevation. The lake is fed by mountain streams and surrounded by walking and cycling paths, picnic areas, and spaces for water recreation.
This reservoir was built in the mid-20th century to generate electricity as part of a regional water management system. Its creation transformed the mountain landscape while supporting both energy production and later recreational use.
The surrounding communities maintain traditional mountain ways, with locals engaged in crafts and land-based work that shape daily life in the area. This connection to the landscape remains visible in how people use and care for the lake and its shores.
The site offers walking and cycling paths, picnic areas, and a small beach for swimmers to enjoy the water. Boat and kayak rentals are available, making it easy to explore the lake from the water.
Each year the lake hosts a national motorcycle gathering that draws riders from across Italy for organized mountain rides. This event transforms the peaceful water setting into an unexpected hub for motorcycle enthusiasts.
