Tokyo Metropolitan Agriculture and Forestry Research Center, Agricultural and forestry research center in Tachikawa, Japan
The Tokyo Metropolitan Agriculture and Forestry Research Center is a public research facility in Tachikawa, west of central Tokyo, running laboratories, greenhouses, and outdoor test plots focused on farming and forestry. The grounds cover both indoor and open-air areas where different plants, trees, and growing techniques are tested under real conditions.
The center opened in April 2005, bringing together agricultural and forestry research work that had previously been spread across different offices within the Tokyo metropolitan government. It was set up to focus that work on the specific needs of farming and green spaces in and around a large urban area.
The center works on tea cultivation, a crop that has been grown in the Tokyo region for centuries and still holds a place in local farming traditions. Visitors walking through the experimental plots can see how researchers keep this practice going alongside newer crops.
The grounds can be explored on foot, with the greenhouses and test plots easy to walk around and observe. The center holds regular seminars and workshops open to farmers and the general public, and no specialist background is needed to take part.
Although the center sits in one of the most densely built-up metropolitan regions in the world, it actively researches forestry, including the management of forested hillsides on the western edge of the Tokyo metro area. This reflects the fact that Tokyo, despite its dense urban core, has large stretches of woodland that need active scientific attention.
