Metropol restaurant, Restaurant in central Saint Petersburg, Russia
Metropol occupies a building on Sadovaya Street with grand halls showcasing columns, painted ceilings, stucco details, and crystal chandeliers throughout the interior. The dining space is organized into three separate halls, each serving different purposes, plus a Belgian pub section.
The building started as Gostiny Dvor, a marketplace in the 19th century, before being converted into its current restaurant use. During the Siege of Leningrad, it remained open and served hot sweet water to people struggling with hunger and cold.
Before the revolution, the place became where Silver Age poets and Saint Petersburg's artists would gather to spend time together. The rooms still carry the feeling of those creative gatherings that shaped the city's cultural life.
The restaurant is centrally located in Saint Petersburg and easy to reach on foot from the city center. It opens at midday and stays open into the evening and night hours, with extended hours on weekends if you prefer a later dinner.
Inside the building you will find Russia's first Belgian brewery, which brews beer using traditional methods in the cellars of the historic brick structure. This brewery remains the only place in Russia where Belgian beer is made following the authentic old ways.
