Great Gostiny Dvor, Department store on Nevsky Avenue, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Great Gostiny Dvor is a large department store on Nevsky Avenue in Saint Petersburg, stretching across several city blocks. The complex features retail space across multiple floors with numerous shops selling a wide range of products and goods.
Construction of this commercial building began in 1757 under architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who created the initial design. Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe took over the project later and completed it in 1785 with a neoclassical style.
The name comes from a Russian trading tradition where merchants from different cities sold goods in one building. Visitors can still sense this historical function today through how the shops are organized by product type and purpose.
Visit outside rush hours when the place tends to get crowded during lunch time and weekends. The complex connects easily to public transportation through underground passages that link to nearby metro stations.
The building contains its own metro station inside, making it a rare example of a department store directly integrated with the subway system. This underground connection lets visitors step directly from the train platform into the shops without going outside.
