Chiesa Madre, Church and national heritage site in Partanna, Italy.

The Chiesa Madre del Santissimo Salvatore occupies a prominent spot on Piazza del Popolo with a neoclassical exterior displaying three entry portals and two levels separated by stone pilasters. Inside, the basilica-style space features extensive stucco work that adorns the walls and ceilings throughout.

Construction began in 1579 under the patronage of Baron Baldassarre Grifeo, and the building was consecrated in 1676 as the church of the Holy Savior. Serious damage from a 1968 earthquake was repaired through a major restoration that returned the building to its former condition by 2019.

The name refers to the Holy Savior, and you can admire the ornate interior created over many decades by craftspeople. The spaces display handcrafted details that reflect the artistic traditions of the region.

The building reopened in 2019 after major restoration work, so you can experience it in its renewed condition. Plan your visit during daytime hours to fully appreciate the decorative details and natural lighting throughout the interior.

The church houses one of the finest organs in Trapani province, handcrafted by Filippo Xaxa and transported from Corleone in 1641. This historical instrument is a notable example of organ-building craftsmanship from that era and contributes greatly to the acoustic character of the interior.
