Bicycle Tree, Natural landmark in Brig o' Turk, Scotland.
The Bicycle Tree is a sycamore specimen standing along Glen Finglas road in Brig o' Turk, with an expanding trunk that has grown around metal objects over many decades. Various metal parts, remnants of the original bicycle and an anchor chain, are now embedded within the bark and wood of the living tree.
A local resident left his bicycle leaning against this tree before departing for military service during World War I, never returning to reclaim it. Over the following decades, as the tree grew, the bicycle became embedded in the expanding wood and bark, with other metal objects eventually being added as well.
The tree holds personal and collective memories of wartime, creating a tangible link between past events and present visitors who see how nature has absorbed human artifacts. This fusion of nature and history shapes how locals and travelers understand the landscape around them.
The tree stands about half a mile north of Brig o' Turk village along the main road through the area, making it easy to reach on foot. You can visit anytime during daylight hours, and there is room to view the embedded metal objects from various angles around the trunk.
Beyond the original bicycle, an anchor chain has also grown into the tree's trunk, suggesting that locals deliberately added objects over time to contribute to the story. Each section of embedded metal tells a different chapter, with new details visible upon closer inspection.
