Dolgoch quarry

Dolgoch quarry, Industrial slate quarry in Gwynedd, Wales

Description

Dolgoch quarry is an abandoned slate mine in Gwynedd with multiple adits carved into the hillside, exposed rock faces, and remains of mining equipment scattered across the site. The terrain displays different levels and access shafts that document various phases of slate extraction work.

History

Slate extraction at this site started in 1877 and ran until 1884, with workers pulling material from three different rock layers. The brief period of operation shows how quickly such operations were affected by economic shifts in the 1800s.

Culture

The quarry was a major employer for local people over many years and shaped how communities in the area developed and worked together. The marks of this work remain visible in the landscape today and reflect the importance of slate mining to Welsh life.

Practical

The quarry can be reached on foot from Bryncrug village using local hiking trails, with the nearby Talyllyn Railway offering another way to get to the area. Sturdy footwear is important since the ground is uneven and there are open pits and sharp rocks to watch out for.

Did you know?

The site has four separate adits near Lower Dolgoch Falls that show different ways miners extracted slate in the 1800s. This variety of access points allows visitors to compare the different mining methods that were used back then.
