Château de Teraoshiro

Château de Teraoshiro is a feudal castle near Yokohama with multiple defensive structures built from stone foundations and wooden walls positioned across different elevation levels of the mountainside. The ruins spread across the terrain and still show how the various components were strategically placed.

The fortification served as a strategic military outpost during the Sengoku period in the 15th century, controlling key access routes in the Kanagawa region. The structure played an important role in monitoring and defending this populated area.

The castle displays traditional Japanese military design with separate zones for warriors, storage, and administration that remain visible in the ruins today. This spatial organization lets visitors understand how daily life was structured within a feudal stronghold.

Visitors can reach the castle ruins by following marked hiking trails through the forested slopes of the mountainside near Yokohama. The paths are well laid out, but the terrain is uneven and requires comfortable footwear.

The elevated position of the castle allowed guards to see both land and sea approaches clearly and detect incoming vessels early. This strategic location made the structure an important observation point for the entire region.
