Portuguese Well

Portuguese Well is a colonial water source in Merlimau built from laterite rocks gathered from nearby beaches. The circular shaft is ringed with stone walls that extend deep underground to reach the fresh water below.

Portuguese soldiers dug this well during their occupation of Malacca to supply their military garrison with fresh water. The construction took place when European forces controlled key positions in the region.

This well shows how early European colonists built infrastructure to meet their practical needs in a new land. The simple stone structure reflects the straightforward approach colonists took to securing fresh water in the region.

The well is located in Merlimau but currently has restricted access due to barbed wire gates blocking the entrance. Visitors should check locally before making the trip and wear sturdy shoes since the ground around it can be uneven.

This well marks one of the southernmost points of Portuguese colonial infrastructure on the Malay Peninsula. Its location reveals how far European forces extended their reach into the region.
