Malaysia Prison Museum, Prison museum in Malacca, Malaysia

The Malaysia Prison Museum is a museum housed in a two-story building in Malacca that displays prison artifacts, photographs, and historical documents. The collection traces how detention practices evolved across different periods.

The building was constructed in 1860 as HM Prison Jail under Governor Colonel Cavenagh and operated as a detention facility for over 150 years. It was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 2014.

The museum displays objects made by inmates and shows how detention practices changed across the decades in this country.

The museum sits on Jalan Parameswara and operates Tuesday through Sunday with standard opening hours. The visit involves climbing stairs and moving through two floors, so comfortable footwear helps you move through the displays easily.

The museum preserves original cell walls with inmate graffiti, showing how people coped with their time inside through markings and messages. A section of the historic Pudu Jail gate from 1895 is also displayed, offering a tangible connection to the region's prison history.
