Malacca Literature Museum

The Malacca Literature Museum sits on St. Paul's Hill and displays manuscripts, historical texts, and literary works in a structure designed as a residential home from the British Malaya period. The collection spans multiple floors and uses various presentation formats including graphic panels, display cases, video screens, and interactive stations throughout the rooms.

The building was originally constructed as a residential home and later served as a prison and headquarters for the Malacca State Development Corporation. After 1974 it was converted into a literature museum to document the region's written heritage.

The museum traces the development of writing in Malaysia, from ancient stone inscriptions to modern script forms, and honors significant local authors whose works shaped regional literature. You can see how written expression evolved across different periods and communities.

The museum is located on a hilltop, so expect stairs to reach the building from the surrounding area. The exhibition spaces spread across multiple levels, so allow time to explore all the rooms and displays at a comfortable pace.

A large mural at the entrance depicts the evolution of writing implements in Malaysia, from ancient stone tablets to modern computer technology. This visual display captures how the tools for written expression have transformed fundamentally over time.
