The Spiral, Under-construction skyscraper in Manhattan, New York
The Spiral is an office complex in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, United States, completed in 2023 and rising over 1,000 feet (305 meters) into the air. The building consists of four stepped sections that set back as they rise, with planted outdoor terraces on each floor featuring trees and shrubs.
Construction started in 2018 following a design by the Danish Bjarke Ingels Group, which sought to blend elements of early 20th-century setback skyscrapers with modern requirements. The project received recognition as the best tall building in its category in 2024 and marked a new direction for office towers in New York.
The name refers to the shape of the outdoor terraces that wind upward around the building like a spiral staircase and create a green ribbon. These planted levels extend the idea of the High Line and offer a space where city workers can step outside during the day.
The terraces are visible from the outside and give passersby a clear view of the stepped structure and the plantings. Visitors should note that the building is primarily used as an office complex, so access to the outdoor areas may be restricted depending on the time of day.
Internal staircases connect floors in double-height spaces and provide a sheltered spot for spontaneous meetings without needing to go outdoors. These open connections draw from an earlier project by the architect in California, where horizontal links were more important.
