The building originally housed the Lord & Taylor department store starting in 1914 before receiving landmark status in 2007. After this designation, Amazon undertook a major transformation to convert it into their New York headquarters.

The building displays textile-inspired artwork across multiple floors, including a nine-story thread sculpture and pieces by local artists. This artistic approach creates a bridge between the site's craft heritage and its present-day technology focus.

The site is easily accessible by public transportation and located in a central business district with many nearby amenities. Visitors should note this is an active office building, so access to certain areas may be restricted.
