2000 Commonwealth Avenue collapse, Construction disaster site in Brighton, US.

2000 Commonwealth Avenue was a 17-story residential building in Brighton with a central elevator shaft and flat slab construction designed for 132 apartments. The structure had multiple serious defects including inadequate concrete strength, improper shoring techniques, and poorly placed reinforcement bars.

The building collapsed on January 25, 1971 during construction, killing four workers and injuring about 30. The failure resulted from critical errors in structural design and construction execution.

The collapse transformed building regulations in Massachusetts and led to stricter safety standards. Today, engineering schools use this incident as a teaching case for construction failures.

The site was an active construction zone with restricted public access. Today, the location remains significant mainly for research and study visits related to construction history and engineering education.

The collapse happened in three distinct phases, starting with a column failure. This gradual process gave many workers time to escape the site.
