Evergreen Cemetery spans nearly 20 acres of land with winding paths, stone monuments, and traditional landscaping near Chestnut Hill Reservoir and Boston College.
The cemetery, established in 1850 by the town of Brighton, replaced the Old Burial Ground on Market Street which had reached capacity in 1764.
The grounds contain numerous monuments of early Boston residents, including Horatio Julius Homer, the first African American police officer in Boston's history.
The cemetery gates open from 7:30 AM to 7 PM during April through September, and from 7:30 AM to 5 PM between October and March.
The cemetery incorporates natural outcrops of Roxbury puddingstone, a distinctive geological formation native to the Boston region.
