Sentier des Douaniers, Coastal viewpoint path in Toulon, France

Sentier des Douaniers is a coastal path in Toulon that stretches for several kilometers along Mediterranean limestone cliffs. The walk connects hidden coves and beaches while offering views across the water and through a rocky landscape.

French customs officials created this path in 1791 to watch the coast and stop smuggling activities. The name of the path comes from the customs officers who once patrolled these cliffs.

Traditional fishing huts with blue shutters line sections of the path and show the maritime heritage of the region. These simple buildings reflect the work that local people have done here for generations.

The path is open year-round, though some sections require careful footing and good shoes are important. Bring plenty of water and sun protection since there is little shade and the sun reflects strongly off the rocky ground.

At Saint-Louis Port, visitors can watch fishing boats depart in the early morning and see how local maritime traditions stay alive. This everyday scene gives a rare look at a craft that has mostly disappeared elsewhere.
