Vallée de la Semois National Park

Vallée de la Semois National Park is a natural area in southern Belgium covering eight municipalities with deep valleys, winding rivers, and steep forest-covered hills. The landscape combines flowing water, dense woods, and meadows that create different terrain for visitors to explore on foot or by bicycle.

The park was established in 2022 as Belgium's effort to protect the Semois River valley as a significant natural area. This creation followed years of planning to safeguard the landscape and its resources for future generations.

The villages within this region reflect local building styles that developed naturally over time. Residents maintain a strong connection to the river and forest traditions that shape daily life here.

This protected area offers more than 687 kilometers of marked trails connecting various natural sites and suitable for both hiking and cycling. The terrain is hilly with varying difficulty levels, so visitors should choose routes that match their fitness level.

Forest covers roughly 86 percent of the park territory, creating small zones with different conditions that support rare plant and animal species. This patchwork of forest types allows life forms to thrive that struggle to survive elsewhere.
