Hangar J1, Port hangar in Joliette district, Marseille, France
Hangar J1 is a massive concrete port structure in Marseille's port district with three levels spanning a large footprint and standing 23 meters tall. The building with its elongated form served for decades as storage and a transit hub for port activities.
The Eiffel Company designed and built this port facility in 1923 to support the expansion of Marseille's harbor activities. The building represents an early industrial achievement in port modernization during that era.
The upper level hosted major art exhibitions when Marseille served as European Capital of Culture in 2013, while lower sections accommodated ferry passengers. The building demonstrates how port structures can transform into cultural spaces.
The building is accessible from various points and offers clear orientation within the port district, though infrastructure is undergoing transformation. Visitors should plan flexibly since conversion to a public cultural space is still in progress.
The building's roof is protected by a large canopy structure creating a public esplanade of around 12,000 square meters. This covered space preserves the original port hall structure while offering a new venue for gatherings.
