Cité de la musique, Cultural center in Parc de la Villette, Paris, France
Cité de la musique is a cultural center in Parc de la Villette in Paris that houses multiple buildings containing concert halls, museums, exhibition spaces, and rehearsal areas. The complex features different performance venues and galleries dedicated to exploring music across genres and time periods.
The center opened in 1995 following architect Christian de Portzamparc's master plan for the music complex. A major expansion by architect Jean Nouvel, the Philharmonie building, was added in 2015 and significantly enlarged the facilities.
People come here to experience music across many styles, from classical to jazz and world traditions, gathered in spaces designed specifically for listening and learning. The halls and galleries reflect how music brings different communities together around shared performances and discoveries.
The center is easily reached by metro at Porte de Pantin station, and visitors can walk from there to reach the main areas. Since the complex has multiple separate buildings, allow time to explore the different spaces and plan which performances or exhibitions to visit.
A large pipe organ with thousands of pipes and many different sound registers was installed in one of the concert halls in 2015. The instrument sounds regularly during special concerts and showcases the range of musical possibilities available in these spaces.
