Grand Brion, Mountain summit in Vercors Massif, France
Grand Brion is a mountain summit in the Vercors Massif rising to 926 meters and consists of a long, forested ridge. This formation creates a natural divide between two valleys and forms a prominent feature in the landscape.
In the late 19th century, a spiral railway tunnel was constructed through the mountain, representing an important achievement in Alpine engineering. This tunnel enabled new transportation routes through the massif.
The mountainside previously housed Notre-Dame de Bréga church, documented in a donation from 1030, marking the religious significance of this elevation.
Hikers should start from the La Valonne parking area and prepare for a challenging route with significant elevation gain. The terrain demands good physical condition and appropriate mountain gear for a safe visit.
The mountain slopes once supported a pottery industry with clay quarries near La Rivoire gorge. This craft tradition has left few visible traces in the landscape today.
