Fonias waterfall, Series of mountain waterfalls in Samothraki, Greece
Fonias waterfall is a series of cascades flowing down a mountain ravine, creating a sequence of natural swimming pools at different levels. The largest cascade drops approximately 35 meters into a spacious deep pool suitable for swimming.
The name Fonias comes from Greek meaning murderer, derived from old stories about people who were lost in the powerful currents of these waters. This dark name preserves memories of the place's dangerous nature in local tradition.
The natural pools at each cascade level serve as refreshing swimming spots where locals and visitors cool off in the mountain waters throughout the summer season.
The first waterfall is reachable after about 35 minutes of hiking from a parking area located east of the town of Therme. Wear sturdy shoes since the path goes over rocks and wet sections, especially after rainfall.
The waterfall system is part of a sequence of natural pools called vathres that are shaped by water flowing from Mount Saos. This chain of pools allows visitors to move between several different swimming spots at varying heights throughout the site.
