Hole N" The Rock, Natural arch and tourist attraction in San Juan County, United States.
Hole N' the Rock is a home carved into a sandstone cliff south of Moab, Utah, with fourteen rooms supported by large rock pillars. The interior spreads across several levels inside the cliff face, with shelves and structural details cut directly from the stone walls.
Work on the dwelling began in 1940, and the family moved in during 1952 after years of carving the rock by hand. The site opened to the public in 1957 and has welcomed visitors ever since.
The rooms are still furnished as they were when the family lived there, with personal objects left in place. A trading post on the property sells Native American pottery and jewelry, giving visitors a second layer of experience beyond the carved home itself.
The site sits right along a main highway south of Moab and is easy to reach by car. Tours of the interior take some time, so it is worth planning a longer stop rather than a quick visit.
The home's chimney was drilled straight through about 65 feet (20 meters) of solid rock to allow the interior rooms to be ventilated. Most visitors walk past this detail without realizing how much effort it took to create.
