Old Baylor Park, Historical park in Independence, United States.
Old Baylor Park preserves the archaeological remains of the original Baylor University campus, with standing stone columns and foundation segments from the 1800s buildings still visible on the grounds. Walking paths guide visitors through the ruins while connecting to regional trails in the surrounding area.
Baylor University was established in 1845 and operated here until moving to Waco in 1886, leaving behind the structural remains now preserved in the park. This relocation marked a turning point as the institution rebuilt itself at a larger, more central location.
The grounds tell the story of how higher education evolved in rural Texas through a religious institution that taught both men and women at a time when this was unusual. Visitors can see how the physical layout reflected the social attitudes of that era.
The park offers picnic tables and a playground, making it accessible for families visiting with children of various ages. The walking paths are easy to navigate and allow for casual exploration at your own pace without rushing.
The park marks the locations of both the male and female departments of early Baylor University, with the women's section later becoming the independent University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. This split created two separate educational institutions that each followed their own path forward.

Texas combines landscapes that barely resemble each other. The west spreads out in deserts and sand dunes, while the east is marked by swamps and dense forests. Between these extremes lie limestone cliffs, natural springs, and waterfalls that bubble up from the ground. The size of the state allows for this variety. A traveler can hike through dry canyons one day and wade through marshland the next. The state preserves places from different chapters of history. Spanish missions built in the 18th century stand near Native American quarries used for thousands of years. Mining towns and military forts from the 1800s now sit empty, their wooden structures weathered by sun and wind. Plantation houses with wide porches remain from before the Civil War. Visitors can also find a Japanese garden in San Antonio, a replica of Stonehenge in the Hill Country, and underwater caves where divers explore submerged passages. The variety makes it possible to see ancient footprints, colonial architecture, and ghost towns in the same trip.
