Wignacourt Water Tower

Wignacourt Water Tower, Water inspection tower in Floriana, Malta.

The Wignacourt Water Tower is a round structure in Floriana with pillared sides, coats of arms carved into it, and a fountain with a horse trough at its base. This building was part of a water system and served as a checkpoint to manage flow along the pipeline.

This building was constructed in the 17th century as part of a water pipeline system that brought springs from highland areas to the city of Valletta. It was built to check and manage water flow during its long journey through the island.

The structure displays coats of arms from both the Order of St. John and Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, showing who held power when it was built. These carved symbols tell you about the rulers who commissioned this building and shaped Malta's past.

The tower stands in a central location in Floriana and is easy to reach on foot. The area around it is generally open and offers good views from nearby streets.

A fleur-de-lis sculpture sits at the tower's peak, representing the symbol of the ruling family. This building is one of three original water checkpoint structures that still remain from when the system first operated.
