War Memorial, War memorial in Floriana, Malta.
The War Memorial stands as a monument in Floriana, featuring a 15-meter travertine marble column topped with a gilded bronze eagle. The circular stone base supports the entire structure and displays bronze panels.
Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated this memorial on May 3, 1954, to commemorate 2,298 Commonwealth aircrew members who died in Mediterranean air operations. It was built to honor those lost during that period.
Bronze panels around the base display the names of those who fell, with the Royal Air Force motto 'Per Ardua Ad Astra' inscribed on the circular foundation. Visitors come here to pay respects and remember.
The memorial is located near Triton Fountain and City Gate at the entrance to Valletta. The site is easily accessible on foot and can be visited during the day.
Lloyd Allan Trigg VC DFC, commemorated here, received the Victoria Cross based solely on enemy testimony of his military actions. This was an exceptional circumstance in the history of the decoration.
