Parc Charruyer, Public park in La Rochelle, France.

Parc Charruyer is a public park in La Rochelle that covers extensive grounds with tree-lined walkways, streams, and canals winding through the landscape. These waterways create natural corridors that guide visitors through different sections of the grounds.

This park was created between 1887 and 1890 following a donation by Adèle Charruyer, daughter of a prosperous ship owner. Her generous gift allowed the land to be transformed into the green space that exists today.

The park has a small zoo section with regional farm animals like Poitou donkeys and Poitevine goats that visitors can observe. These breeds represent traditional farming practices still connected to the local area.

The park is open to visitors daily, with closing times that change depending on the season. Plan your visit for the quieter hours to move through different areas at a comfortable pace.

The waterways running through the park come from the old moats of medieval fortifications that once protected the city. This repurposed infrastructure shows how the city transformed its defensive past into a pleasant green space.
