Montée des Dauphins, Mountain hiking trail near Bastille fortifications, Grenoble, France.

Montée des Dauphins is a hiking trail in Grenoble that climbs from the city streets upward toward the Bastille fortress. The path passes through mixed terrain with both gradual slopes and steeper sections that keep walkers engaged throughout the route.

The route follows traditional paths that once led soldiers and supplies to the Bastille fortress, which has stood as a defensive structure since the 16th century. Over time, the path itself became known as a walking destination rather than only a military passage.

The path connects Grenoble's urban streets with the Alpine landscape, and locals regularly use it as a place to get away and spend time in nature. You'll see walkers and climbers throughout the day, especially on weekends, making it a social spot for the community.

Sturdy shoes are essential since parts of the trail can be slippery and the ground is often uneven. Starting early in the day is wise, especially if you move at a slower pace or want to take breaks along the way.

Hidden beneath the main trail are ancient stone steps that lead down into a natural cave, offering a passage through the inside of the mountain. Few visitors know about this underground route, though adventurous hikers sometimes discover and explore it.
