Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car, Urban cable car in Grenoble, France.
The Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car connects the city center to the Bastille fortress through transparent spherical cabins, ascending 500 meters above the Isère River. Two stations serve the system: a lower one near city gardens and an upper one located at the fortress on the hilltop.
Inaugurated in 1934, this was France's first urban cable car, designed by architect Jean Benoît to reach the military fortification. The project pioneered modern transport systems and showcased innovative engineering techniques for its era.
The distinctive round transparent cabins called 'Les Bulles' have become a recognized symbol of Grenoble since their introduction in 1976. Local residents and visitors use them regularly to escape the city and enjoy views from the upper station.
The lower station is easily accessible on foot from the city center, and the ride takes only a few minutes to reach the fortress above. Travel on clear days when visibility is best, allowing you to see the surrounding mountains and the city below clearly.
The glass cabins offer passengers unobstructed 360-degree views throughout the entire journey, distinguishing this ride from other cable cars. On clear days, Mont Blanc is visible from the top, creating a memorable moment at the end of the ascent.
