Aliwagwag Falls, Multi-tiered waterfall in Cateel, Philippines
Aliwagwag Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall in Cateel composed of many distinct steps that flow through natural rock formations. The water descends at different levels, creating a series of pools and channels throughout the cascade.
Before modern roads were built, people could only reach the waterfall by boat along the Cateel River through thick forests. Road development later made the site much more accessible to travelers.
The Mandaya people regard this waterfall as a sacred place woven into their daily practices and community traditions. Local residents continue to use the river and falls for purposes that remain integral to their way of life.
From Davao City, the drive takes about five hours, and local guides are available at the entrance. Sturdy shoes and a reasonable fitness level are recommended, as the path goes through rough terrain.
The waterfall connects more than a dozen rapids within the forest and displays natural stone formations with many steps. This arrangement makes it a rare formation where water flows through the landscape in unexpected ways.
