Phare du Fort de Brescou, Coastal lighthouse on volcanic islet near Agde, France
The Phare du Fort de Brescou is a lighthouse located on a small volcanic island near Agde along the Mediterranean coast. It stands on top of Fort de Brescou, a rocky islet positioned several hundred meters offshore that serves as a natural foundation for the structure.
The structure was built in 1836 to replace an earlier stone tower that once marked this strategically important coastal location. It has undergone several modernizations since its construction and became fully automated in 1989, continuing to serve maritime navigation along this stretch of coast.
The lighthouse has served as a visual landmark for the local community and passing sailors for nearly two centuries. It represents a connection to the sea that remains central to how people understand this corner of the Mediterranean coast.
Visitors can view the island from the shoreline and observe the structure from various vantage points around Agde. Access to the island itself is restricted due to its offshore location and conservation needs, so it is best explored from a distance using land-based viewpoints or boat tours along the coast.
Underwater archaeological research revealed an ancient ship unloading zone between the island and mainland, containing artifacts spanning multiple periods. This discovery shows that these waters have been used as an important harbor area since antiquity.

Agde and the adjoining Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean coast offer photographers a mix of volcanic rock formations, black sand beaches, and historic architecture. The 12th-century Cathédrale Saint-Étienne stands in the old town center, built from local basalt. Fort de Brescou, a 16th-century fortress on an offshore island, marks the region's maritime history. The port area and the Musée de l'Éphèbe, which displays Greek and Roman artifacts recovered from the Mediterranean, document the city's long seafaring tradition. The coastline provides varied subjects, including Mont Saint-Loup, a 114-meter (374-foot) extinct volcano, Plage de la Grande Conque with its black pebbles, and the volcanic cliffs at Cap d'Agde. The Thau Lagoon near Sète, Île des Loisirs with its recreational facilities, and the Hérault River mouth at Le Grau d'Agde extend the photographic possibilities. Additional sites include Château Laurens, an Art Nouveau building, the Round Lock on the Canal du Midi, the Brescou lighthouse, and the 14th-century Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-l'Agenouillade.
