Midyeci Ahmet Çengelköy, Seafood restaurant in Çengelköy, Turkey
Midyeci Ahmet Çengelköy is a seafood restaurant on the Bosphorus waterfront in the Çengelköy neighborhood of Istanbul. The menu centers on mussels, both stuffed and fried, alongside other traditional fish dishes, and the dining area looks directly out over the water.
The restaurant was founded in the 1980s by a man who moved from southeastern Turkey and brought his cooking methods with him to Istanbul. He had worked with seafood from a young age and chose Çengelköy as the place to settle and open his first location.
The name Midyeci Ahmet simply means "Ahmet the mussel seller," which tells you exactly what to expect before you even sit down. Mussels stuffed with rice and spices are the main dish here, a street food tradition that has found a permanent home in a proper restaurant setting.
The restaurant is right on the waterfront in Çengelköy and easy to reach on foot from the neighborhood ferry stop. Outdoor tables along the water fill up quickly on weekends and summer evenings, so arriving early in the day gives you a better choice of seats.
The founder came from a landlocked region of Turkey, far from the sea, yet built his reputation entirely around mussels and seafood. The restaurant has since opened branches in other countries, all following the same recipes from this original Çengelköy location.
