Skanzen főépület, History museum and station building in Szentendre, Hungary
Skanzen főépület is the main building of the Hungarian Open-Air Museum in Szentendre, serving as the entrance and information hub for the entire complex. From here, visitors access the reconstructed villages and farmsteads spread across the grounds.
The museum was founded in 1967 with the aim of documenting rural building traditions from across Hungary before they disappeared. Over the following decades, the site grew steadily and now covers rural life from the 18th to the early 20th century.
The buildings at Skanzen come from different regions of Hungary and show how rural life varied from one area to another. Walking through the site, visitors can see furnished interiors, farming tools, and workshops that reflect everyday habits from past centuries.
The grounds are large, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea since most of the visit is done on foot. Some sections may be closed on certain days or outside the main season, so it is worth checking before arrival.
Every building on the site was taken apart piece by piece at its original location and then reassembled here using the same methods used to build it. Some of these structures came from villages that no longer exist, making this the only place where they can still be seen.
