Sas-kövi Cave, artificial cavity in Szentendre
Sas-kövi is a cave in the Visegrád Mountains near Szentendre with a total length of about 63 meters. The entrance sits at the base of a steep rocky cliff and leads into a system of corridors, chambers, and narrow passages that were formed by water and later expanded by people.
The cave has been documented since at least the 1920s and shows signs of both natural formation and human use over many centuries. Archaeological findings suggest it served as shelter or a work site during medieval times.
The cave is open year-round and free to visit, located about 1.5 kilometers from the Tátika bus stop in Szentendre. The trail is well-marked and passes through quiet forest before reaching the cliff.
The name comes from the steep rocky cliff Sas-kő that towers above the cave entrance. The interior contains fine calcite crystals and manganese coatings on walls and ceiling, revealing how water slowly shaped the rock over thousands of years.
