Church of the Assumption, Szentendre

The Church of the Assumption is a brick building with Baroque architecture and a bell tower added in 1777. The structure combines traditional Orthodox design elements with 18th-century European building styles.

Construction began in 1756 following the Serbian migration of 1690 and finished in 1763. The church was consecrated in 1764 and became an important place for the Serbian Orthodox community in the region.

The interior features a Rococo-style iconostasis that reflects Serbian Orthodox religious traditions in Hungary. The space shows how Eastern and Western European church designs meet in one building.

The site is centrally located in Szentendre and easily reached on foot. Visiting works year-round, and guests should respect religious practices and any rules about respectful behavior.

A tall bell tower was added on a bishop's initiative and shapes the building's exterior. This tower sets the structure apart from many other Orthodox churches in Europe and makes it recognizable from afar.
