Distillery District
Distillery District is a neighborhood in Toronto built on a former industrial site from the 19th century, made up of more than 40 historic brick buildings. Cobblestone streets run between these structures, which now hold shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants.
James Worts and William Gooderham founded a distillery on this site in 1832, and it grew into one of the largest of its kind in the world. After World War One and Prohibition, activity slowed and alcohol production stopped for good in the 1990s.
The name of the district comes directly from its past as a whisky-making site. Today, local artists show their work in galleries and studios inside the old brick buildings, while small shops sell handmade goods along the cobblestone streets.
The district is easy to walk through, as the cobblestone streets are short and easy to follow. It is well served by bus and streetcar, and most of the buildings are accessible to visitors.
The old buildings have been used as a film set so often that more than 1700 movies and television shows have been shot here, including titles like X-Men and Chicago. Visitors who look closely can spot details that appear in scenes they may already know.
