Underpass Park, Urban park beneath overpasses in Toronto, Canada
Underpass Park is a recreational area built beneath the Eastern Avenue and Richmond-Adelaide overpasses, stretching between Cherry Street and Bayview Avenue. It features half-court basketball courts, a skate park with rails, children's play areas, and LED lighting that enables evening use.
The park's first phase opened in August 2012 as part of an effort to convert unused waterfront spaces into recreational areas in Toronto. This project represented a turning point in revitalizing infrastructure spaces throughout the city.
The art installation 'Mirage' by Paul Raff Studios creates visual transitions across different zones of the park. Visitors experience these reflections as they move through the space, which transforms how they perceive the overpass structure above.
The park is easily accessible with level pathways suitable for various users, and the LED lighting enables activities after dark. Visitors should know that the space under the overpass stays warm in summer and cool in winter due to its sheltered structure.
This space is Canada's largest park constructed beneath an overpass and incorporates the concrete columns as integral design elements. This hidden location under infrastructure creates a retreat in the middle of the city that many residents overlook.
