Villiers Island, Artificial island in Toronto, Canada
The 39.6-hectare Villiers Island emerges from Toronto's Port Lands through the construction of new waterways, including the Don River extension and Keating Channel.
The area transformed from Ashbridge's Bay wetlands to industrial lands in the early 1900s, leading to environmental concerns that prompted the current restoration project.
The island received the name Ookwemin Minising, meaning 'place of black cherry trees', through collaboration with Indigenous communities and their knowledge keepers.
Development plans include 9,000 residential units, with 30 percent designated as affordable housing, along with schools, community centers, and transit connections.
The $1.3 billion flood protection project creates naturalized waterways around the island while maintaining industrial heritage structures from the early 20th century.
