El Gato Negro, Traditional café on Corrientes Avenue, Buenos Aires, Argentina

El Gato Negro is a traditional café located on Corrientes Avenue that doubles as a specialty shop. The establishment offers an extensive selection of spices, teas, and artisanal coffee varieties for customers to browse and purchase.

Spanish explorer Victoriano López Robredo founded the business in 1927 after working across Ceylon, Singapore, and the Philippines. His experience sourcing and handling spices from these regions shaped what would become the shop's core offerings.

The name comes from a black cat with a red bow tie that the founder spotted on dining car menus during his travels. The interior with its oak counters, Thonet chairs, and bronze chandeliers tells the story of a different era.

The café welcomes visitors daily and lets you sit while shopping for products at the same time. Weekend hours extend much later, giving you plenty of time to browse and enjoy the space.

The establishment earned recognition as a Notable Café and Cultural Heritage site in Buenos Aires. This acknowledgment reflects its role as an important part of the city's historical fabric.
