Dom Rybaka, Socialist realist hotel and museum in Władysławowo, Poland.
Dom Rybaka is a socialist realist building in Władysławowo, on the Polish Baltic coast, featuring a central observation tower that looks out over the sea and the Hel Peninsula. The building now holds several exhibitions, including a Butterfly Museum and an optical illusion show.
The building was constructed in the 1950s as a hotel for fishermen, part of a state effort to support the fishing industry on the Baltic coast. Over time it lost its original purpose, serving as the local municipal office before becoming a cultural venue.
The ground floor holds an exhibition of Kashubian craftsmanship alongside sculptures by the local artist Leon Goll. Old photographs on the walls show how the town has changed over the decades.
The tower is visible from a distance and works well as a reference point when moving around the waterfront area. All the exhibitions are indoors, so a visit is possible at any time of year regardless of the weather.
The tower of Dom Rybaka is used by ships at sea as a navigation reference point, which is unusual for a cultural building. This double role, part landmark for sea traffic and part exhibition space, is rare for a building of this type.
