Tokyo Fire Department, Fire department headquarters in Ōtemachi, Japan.
The headquarters of the Tokyo Fire Department stands in Ōtemachi and coordinates the deployment of more than eighteen thousand staff members across the entire metropolitan area. The building houses control rooms, training facilities and workshops for technical maintenance of vehicles.
The current fire service emerged in 1948 as an independent organization after separating from the police authority. Its roots reach back to 1881, when it was part of the metropolitan police force.
The department wears traditional happi coats during public events, showing the historical connection to Edo fire brigades. Visitors can see the typical red vehicles and modern equipment in the courtyard during open days.
The headquarters sits near several subway stations in the Ōtemachi business district and is within walking distance from Tokyo Station. Public tours occur on special occasions, usually on weekends.
The fire service deploys twelve different types of robots that can work in smoke-filled or collapse-prone areas. These machines transmit images and data to the response teams outside.
