Ōtemachi, Financial district in Chiyoda-ku, Japan
Ōtemachi is a business district in Chiyoda-ku located north of Tokyo Station and extending east of the Imperial Palace with numerous office towers and corporate headquarters. The area consists of modern high-rises and commercial buildings connected by underground passages and multiple subway stations.
The district's name comes from the Otemon gate of Edo Castle, where daimyo Matsudaira Tadamasa built residences during the Edo period. The area developed from an ancient village settlement into a modern financial center hosting major corporate groups today.
The district functions as the hub of Japanese journalism, with major newspapers like the Nikkei, Yomiuri Shimbun, and Asahi Shimbun operating from here. This role shapes how the area feels today, making it a central place for news gathering and information sharing.
Multiple subway lines pass through this area, including the Chiyoda Line and Marunouchi Line, providing easy access to Tokyo Station through underground corridors. Getting around the district is straightforward thanks to these interconnected passages, which are especially helpful during bad weather.
The area once was the ancient village of Shibazaki before transforming into Japan's leading financial hub in a relatively short time. Today major corporate groups like Mizuho Financial and Mitsubishi Estate have their headquarters planted firmly in this transformed landscape.
