Mudec, Museum of cultures in Porta Genova district, Milan, Italy
Mudec is a museum of world cultures located in the Porta Genova neighborhood of Milan, housed in a converted industrial building with curved central spaces and geometric exhibition halls. The structure was designed by architect David Chipperfield and transforms a former manufacturing facility into contemporary gallery spaces.
The museum's collection grew over two centuries through donations from explorers, missionaries, and scholars, gathering more than 7,000 artifacts with origins dating back to 1200 BC. The building itself opened in 2015 as a public-private partnership between Milan Municipality and 24 ORE Cultura, establishing new models for managing cultural institutions.
The collection presents objects from Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania, including artwork, textiles, and musical instruments that reflect the creative traditions and daily practices of these regions. Visitors can see how different cultures expressed themselves through craft and design.
The museum provides visitors with dining options including a bistrot and restaurant for meals and refreshment. Exhibitions are generally accessible until one hour before the published closing time, allowing visitors to plan their visit accordingly.
The building sits on the site of a former printing plant and preserves parts of the original industrial architecture while creating entirely new exhibition spaces. This blend of old and new allows visitors to experience the site's transformation firsthand.
