Oratorio di San Protaso, Religious oratory in Lorenteggio district, Milan, Italy
The Oratorio di San Protaso is a religious oratory in Milan with a rectangular layout and a wooden coffered ceiling. Three ogival openings along the side walls allow light to enter the interior space.
This oratory was established on January 17, 1001, as a place of worship for rural people living outside medieval Milan's walls. Over time it remained an important gathering place for the surrounding communities.
The interior contains frescoes showing hunting scenes and religious subjects, some attributed to Fra' de Porta Vercellina. These painted works remain visible today and reflect the artistic tastes of the communities who gathered here.
This oratory opens to visitors during the Festa del Lorenteggio neighborhood festival held on the first Sunday of May and the last Sunday of November. Plan your visit around these dates if you want to see inside the building.
Today this structure sits in the median strip of a busy road, preserved through community protests against demolition in the 1950s. Its unusual location today reflects how determined residents were to save this building.
