Giolitti
Giolitti is a café in Rome that has served gelato and pastries using traditional recipes since 1900. Located near the Pantheon, it offers more than 50 ice cream flavors made from natural ingredients using artisanal methods without artificial additives.
The Giolitti family arrived from Piedmont in the 1800s and opened a dairy shop in 1890 on Salita del Grillo, becoming suppliers to the Royal Palace. The business shifted focus to ice cream in later decades, expanding in the 1930s with a new location and a vegetarian restaurant.
The name Giolitti comes from the family who established the shop in 1890 after arriving from Piedmont. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors come together to experience gelato while participating in a ritual that has been passed down for generations.
The shop is within walking distance of the Pantheon and many other historic sites in Rome. Afternoon hours tend to be busiest, so visiting early in the day or later in the evening helps you avoid the longest queues.
Giolitti uses an old-fashioned ordering system where you pay at the cashier first, receive a receipt, and then present it to the server who fills your cup or cone. This unusual method has been part of how the shop works for generations and adds to the distinctive experience of a visit.
