Manuel's Tavern
Manuel's Tavern is a pub and restaurant in Atlanta located in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood. The interior is simple but full of character, with old photographs and sports memorabilia decorating the walls, while a central bar serves drinks and classic pub food including burgers and sandwiches.
Founded in 1956, Manuel Maloof purchased a small delicatessen called Harry's Delicatessen and transformed it into a neighborhood bar by incorporating salvaged furniture and fixtures from buildings being demolished. The founder later became a political leader in Georgia's Democratic Party and used the tavern as a gathering place for civic discussion.
Named after founder Manuel Maloof, the tavern was created as a gathering place for the community and remains one today. You can see this reflected in how different groups use the space together - workers, reporters, politicians, and neighbors all share the same tables and bar stools naturally.
The tavern is quieter during weekday afternoons but fills up in evenings and on weekends, especially during sporting events. Visiting during off-peak hours allows for a more relaxed experience if you prefer a calmer setting.
The original tavern was built using salvaged furniture and fixtures from buildings being demolished, giving it a history woven into its physical structure. This resourceful approach by the founder meant that pieces of Atlanta's past are literally part of the space visitors experience today.
